GW/MW-016

Summit Information for GW/MW-016
Pen y Garn-goch - 487m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 52 8 19 N, Longitude: 3 37 55 W
Grid Reference: SN 884502, QTH Locator: IO82ED
Today's Sunrise: 07:46 UTC, Today's Sunset: 16:15 UTC

Joint activation with Allan GW4VPX & Mal GW6OVD

For today's activation of Pen Y Garn-goch I was joined for the first time by Allan, (GW4VPX).
We left the main road (A483) and took the narrow lane north west to Bwlchmawr Farm
SN 893 508 where the lane heads south west.  After about 600M we came to the forestry track on the right, and followed this as it zig zagged up the mountain towards the summit.  Eventually we came to a clearing at SN-885-502 with a spectacular view of the valley below and Mynydd Eppynt.  Here the vehicle track end,s but there is a clearly defined path which heads north and then curls around behind the trig point.
At the summit there is a large clearing surrounded by mature trees which offer good shelter from the wind.
After reading several activation reports on the SOTA website we were a little apprehensive about this one, but we found our experience to be entirely positive and enjoyed the day very much.

GW/MW-034 & 036

Summit Information for GW/MW-034
Mynydd Cynros - 329m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 51 58 31 N, Longitude: 4 0 38 W
Grid Reference: SN 620327, QTH Locator: IO71XX
Today's Sunrise: 07:33 UTC, Today's Sunset: 16:27 UTC

For today's activation of Mynyss Cynros I chose not to take the traditional route from Talley as it would mean having the very brisk wind in my face for the ascent.  Instead I parked at SN 069 324 where there is just about enough room to park 1 car without causing an obstruction.  From hear I headed east through the gate following the tree line up to the point where you can cross the stream. (SN 612 324)
After crossing the stream I continued following the fence until I reached another gate where there is a track all the way to the summit.  My activation was limited to 60 meters today as the wind was so strong at the summit my fishing pole was bending like a s hook!  With 21 contacts logged on 60 I decided not to push my luck any further as I would be needing the pole for my next activation (GW/MW-036)

This activation is very straightforward,  from my starting point at SN 501 282 you can clearly see the trig point on the horizon to the north east just over 300 meters away.  This time I chose to set up a little to the right of the trig point, well away from the overhead power lines, using the trees to shelter the antenna.  Not ideal I admit, but judging by my log it didn't have too much of a detrimental effect on signals, with good reports exchanged both ways.
Many thanks to all who assisted with today's activation's of GW/MW 034 & 036,  and apologies to any stations I was unable to work.

GW/MW-025

 GW/MW-025  The Begwns
415m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 52 5 25 N, Longitude: 3 14 5 W
Grid Reference: SO 155443, QTH Locator: IO82JC

Lying about 4 miles to the north of Glasbury, Begwns, or "The Roundabout" as it's known locally, is a great summit for the newcomer to SOTA.
The access road is very narrow with few passing points but once you reach the common there is ample parking alongside the road.
At well under a kilometers walk and just 45 meters of ascent this is an easy yet enjoyable summit to visit.
Near the trig point there is a small wooded area surrounded by a dry stone wall which offers good shelter from the wind.  Within this walled area is large semicircular seat which I chose to use to set up my equipment for this activation.  It was a little tricky avoiding the trees when setting up my 60m inverted V but the results proved it to be worth the effort.
All in all, a very pleasant activation and I'm sure I will revisiting this one many times in years to come.
Many thanks to all those who helped with today's activation of  GW/MW-025.
