GW/SW-022 & 032

Summit Information for GW/SW-022
Trichrug - 415m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: South Wales
Latitude: 51 53 21 N, Longitude: 3 53 30 W
Grid Reference: SN 699229, QTH Locator: IO81BV

The starting point for today’s  first activation is SN694 225 where there is enough parking for 1 or 2 cars but this one is quite remote and you are unlikely to run into anyone else.  The access road gets very rough for the last kilometer so take care.
Access to the summit is straightforward from here, just cross the stile and head north east, keeping the dry stone wall to your right, and there is just 1 fence to negotiate along the way.
At the summit there is plenty of room for antennas and I found a nice sheltered spot behind the dry stone wall to set up for my activation.
Very quiet on VHF today so I used a combination of 2 and 40 to get my 9 contacts including a S2S with Barry MW0IML on GW/NW – 030, who I worked on both bands. Later I packed up the  gear and paused to take a few photos before moving on to the next summit.  The 360 deg. view from the summit is breath-taking so don’t forget your camera

Summit Information for GW/SW-032
Mynydd Allt-y-grug - 339m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: South Wales
Latitude: 51 45 20 N, Longitude: 3 48 39 W
Grid Reference: SN 751079, QTH Locator: IO81CS

Following a pleasant drive across Mynydd  Du,  I arrived at the starting point for my second and final activation of the day SN742 073 where parking  was a little challenging.
From here there is a clearly defined path which zigzags up through the forestry emerging about half way up the mountain.  I headed north east along the edge of the trees until I came to a spot where I could easily cross the fence. From here I headed east for a while until I met a rough track heading north east all the way to the summit.
The summit is very exposed with lots of room for antennas but there is no trig point or shelter of any kind.  Not particularly good VHF take off from here and I really struggled with contacts few and far between, but I persevered until I completed my activation.
Many thanks to all stations that helped with my activation of GW/SW-022 & 032 today.

GW/SW-016

Summit Information for GW/SW-016
Ysgyryd Fawr - 486m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: South Wales
Latitude: 51 51 29 N, Longitude: 2 58 22 W
Grid Reference: SO 331182, QTH Locator: IO81MU

At our starting point at SO328-163 there is ample parking for 8-10 cars, but this summit is very popular with walkers so arrive early.
There is a good path which rises steeply through the woods and most of the 260mtr assent is done in the first kilometer or so.  There are a couple of well placed benches along this route should you need a rest.
As you emerge from the woods its not long before you can start to appreciate the incredible views that make this summit one of the most enjoyable we have visited.
The gradient becomes lees steep from here and soon  the summit was in sight.
We couldn't have picked a better day for this one,  just a light breeze, warm sunshine and excellent visibility.
We found that the summit had a good VHF takeoff and we soon completed our activation with contacts as far away as Brixham, on the south coast and 5 summit to summit.

A great day and a well earned 1 point!

GW/SW-037 & GW SW-025

Summit Information for GW/SW-037
Craig yr Allt - 274m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: South Wales
Latitude: 51 33 25 N, Longitude: 3 15 7 W
Grid Reference: ST 133850, QTH Locator: IO81IN

Post to follow

This was one of our local summits. The access to this summit is very good, with room for a few cars to park. Once you have passed through the gate there is a short walk before you turn right to head up to the summit. There is a large fallen tree that you need to head for. once you have found this the route it is well defined.

The summit is not marked by a trig point and can be busy with horse riding from a local riding school.
The VHF take off is good on this summit.

This summit has great views of the Valleys and Cardiff area.

This was the second summit of the day. There is only a few miles between  them and well worth the effort Access to this summit can be from two directions with limited parking both sides. Good views of the surrounding areas overlooking the A470. Takes 20 mins from car to summit.
Once again a busy summit in good weather but plenty of room to set up equipment. Good VHF take off .
